A new study suggests that the most effective anti-inflammatory drug in the world is augmentin. In this study, researchers reviewed the records of patients hospitalized for heartburn and used a combination of four pain medications to find out how the drugs interact with each other.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, found that patients who used the combination of four anti-inflammatory medications in the study had a higher frequency of side effects with augmentin. The combination drug was also associated with a higher incidence of serious cardiovascular events. In addition, the combination drug caused fewer hospitalizations than the other combination drugs.

“While we are still investigating the effects of augmentin on heartburn, we found that these combinations are associated with a lower incidence of adverse events compared to the other two drug combinations,” says lead author Dr. John G. Cuzick, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Pittsburgh, who led the study.

“The findings suggest that combining the two drugs may reduce the intensity and frequency of adverse events,” Cuzick says. “These findings may be important for clinicians and patients, especially in the context of a longer-term study of combination therapy for patients with heartburn.”

The study also included a group of patients with mild to moderate heartburn, which is considered a moderate to severe condition. They took the combination drug for five days and then continued with the medication for another five days.

“If there is a serious adverse event, patients who have been hospitalized for heartburn must be hospitalized immediately,” Cuzick says.

In the study, patients who took the combination drug were significantly more likely to experience a serious cardiovascular event than those who took the placebo medication. This could mean a higher risk of serious cardiovascular events for the combination drug, the study authors say.

“Patients who were hospitalized for heartburn were less likely to have a serious cardiovascular event than those who received a placebo,” they conclude.

The study was published online July 8, 2015.
